Dhanteras is also known as ‘Dhan Trayodashi’. ‘Puja’ with the proper procedure is believed to bring prosperity and happiness.
Dhanteras 2018- Date and auspicious timings
In 2018 Dhanteras falls on 5th November- Monday,
& the auspicious Puja timing is between 6:05 PM to 8:01 PM
Perform Puja in this auspicious time
- · It is believed that on the ‘Trayodashi Tithi’ of the ‘Karthik Krishna Paksh’ Lord Dhanwantari was born. And this is why this day is known as Dhanteras
- · Bhagwan Dhanwantari was originated from ‘Samudra Manthan’ and He was born with a vase or ‘kalash’ of ‘amrit’ in his hand
- · This is also why there is a tradition where buying utensils on Dhanteras are considered auspicious, as Bhagwan Dhanwantari was born with a ‘kalash’ himself
- · Dhanwantari is known to be the doctor of all deities, which is why Dhanteras is also known as ‘Ayurveda Diwas’
- · The day the sea was churned and Lord Dhanwantari was born, was also the day when Goddess Laxmi was born.
- · On Dhanteras, Kuber Ji, Goddess laxmi, Dhanwantari and Yamraj are worshipped.
Importance of Yam Puja on the Dhanteras day
According to religious beliefs, Yamraj had said that
If any human, on the date of Trayodashi of the Karthik KrishnaPaksh lights a lamp or ‘deepak’ at the main entrance of his/her house facing Southern direction then his/her life shall be free of the curse of untimely death or ‘akaal mrityu'
Therefore, on this day we must worship Lord Yamraj following proper rites and rituals
List of Items required for Dhanteras Puja
A short wooden stool or ‘paata’, a four-sided Earthen Lamp or ‘diya’, Cotton wicks, Gangajal, Roli, Akshat or Unbroken Rice, One rupee coin, some Sugar, a Conch with a hole, Flowers, Sweets, Mustard oil or Sesame oil, Pure Ghee and Pure Water
In the evening time on Dhanteras, we first worship Yam, then Bhagwan Dhantari, Lord Ganesh, Goddess Laxmi and Kuber Ji
Puja ‘vidhi’ or the proper procedure of the Puja that is to be followed on Dhanteras
- · First of all, take the wooden ‘paata’/ Chowki and make a Swastika on it by using roli.
- · Now keep an earthen lamp or ‘deepak’ on this and place four cotton wicks in it.
- · Now sprinkle Gangajal thrice around all the four sides of the lamp.
- · Then apply tilak on it with the roli, and then some akshat or rice that is not broken.
- · After that put some sugar, a one rupee coin and one conch- please mind that the conch or ‘kaudi’ should have a hole in it.
- · Now offer some flowers and pray for the prosperity and happiness of the family.
- · Apply tilak on all family members.
- · Now keep this at the main entrance of the house on the right side of the main door taking care that the flame of the lamp should face towards the south.
- · If possible, chant the ‘Dhanwantari mantra’ 108 times. It is said to bring more auspicious results Dhanvantari Mantra is ‘Om Dhan Dhanwantaraaye Namah’
- · After chanting for 108 times, say that “we offer our obeisance to You, Lord, bless us with the best of health”
- · After this Puja, you must worship Lord Ganesh, Goddess Laxmi and Lord Kuber. For this, do ‘panchopchaar puja’, offer flowers, light earthen lamps and offer sweets as ‘bhog’ do the deities.
